Volunteer Opportunities

Are you looking for a meaningful way to make a difference? MCC offers many volunteer opportunities that will allow you to share your skills and talents with our program participants. A short description of our on-going volunteer opportunities is listed below. We also provide volunteer opportunities for churches, schools, businesses and university student groups.

Emergency Food Pantry:

Food Drive Organizer
Organize a food drive at your office, school or church to benefit low income families in Milwaukee's south side. Any amount of nonperishable items will gladly be accepted and distributed through our Emergency Food Pantry. A food drive can be conducted at any time throughout the year, but is most needed around the holiday season (November to December). No prior experience necessary, just the desire to help feed those in need. Minimum age is 13.

Food Shipment Assistant
Each Monday our food pantry receives large food shipments from the Hunger Task Force. Work with the food pantry coordinator to unload and sort these food shipments. Food boxes are heavy, so volunteers should be able to lift 25 - 50 lbs. Minimum age is 16. Hours are Mondays from 9am to 11am/noon. Minimum commitment is 2 hours per visit.

Food Distribution Assistant
MCC is always in need of hard-working and dedicated volunteers to help out in our food pantry Monday through Thursday between 11:00am and 3:30pm to organize and pack ethnically appropriate food and distribute it to the Emergency Food Pantry clients. It's important that you interact well with and respect our culturally diverse clients. You must be able to lift 10 lbs. Volunteers bilingual in Spanish, Hmong or Lao are encouraged to apply. Minimum age is 16. Minimum commitment of 2 hours per visit.

Survey Coordinator
In an effort to obtain important feedback and information from our food pantry clientele, the Emergency Food Pantry Survey Coordinator conducts surveys on a weekly basis. Surveys aim to provide Milwaukee Christian Center's food pantry staff with a better idea of the people we are serving and how these individuals meet their basic needs. Some of the questions will be about prioritizing bills and other expenses. Some training will be provided. We are looking for an organized, personable volunteer. Volunteers must be willing to work in a culturally-diverse environment. Minimum age is 18. Hours are Monday through Thursday afternoons 1-3:30pm. We ask that you commit to 4 hours per week which can be split between two days.

Senior Adults Program:

Meal Service Assistant
Enjoy the company of a diverse group of Caucasian, Hmong, Laotian and Latino seniors while assisting in the set-up and serving of catered mid-day meals on Mondays or Fridays OR help with cooking an Asian meal from scratch Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Cleanup assistance is needed with both meal programs. Lunch preparation begins at 9:30 am, is served at 11:30am, and cleanup is finished by 12:30pm. Minimum age is 18 and commitment is 2 hours, for one or two days a week.

Senior Companion
Spend a few hours interacting with our diverse group of seniors. Ideas for activities include: playing games/cards/dominoes, making crafts, sewing, or playing music. MCC's senior program is open from 9:30am to 1:30pm Monday through Friday. Minimum age for volunteers is 16 and commitment is 2 hours, for one or two days a week.

Youth Programs:

Summer Program Assistant
Help out with MCC's summer youth programming. Mornings involve academic enrichment and afternoons consist of fun field trips and recreation. Looking for responsible adults to assist with activities and act as chaperones for field trips. Patience and a sense of humor are a must! Summer program scheduled for weekdays from late June to mid-August.

Program Assistant (During School Year Only)
MCC is seeking enthusiastic, dependable and friendly teens and adults interested in working with and being a mentor for youth ages 7-12. Patience and flexibility are a must! A sense of humor and positive attitude are helpful. Individual job descriptions are tailored to the volunteer’s specific talents or interests. In the past volunteers have helped with program registration, homework help, preparing and serving the afternoon snack, computer lab assistance, arts & crafts projects, chaperoning field trips, assisting with Boys/Girls clubs, and working on special events or bulletin boards.  

After School Tutor (During School Year Only)
MCC is looking for volunteers to help kids in the youth program succeed academically.  Volunteers will help kids with homework, report youth academic progress to staff, and work with the youth on developing individual academic achievement incentives. No prior experience is required. Tutors will be working with youth on math, language arts, science, spelling and social studies.   Patience and flexibility are a must! We ask that all volunteers be at least 16 years old. The youth programs operate during the school year Monday - Friday from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. Volunteers may schedule their hours within that time frame.  MCC asks that all volunteers commit to a minimum of 2-4 hours/week, preferably Monday - Thursday. 

Kids Cafe Meal Service Assistant (During School Year Only)
MCC welcomes dependable, hard-working and friendly teens and adults that are interested in working with kids. The volunteers will assist with meal preparation, help set up tables, serve the meal to program participants, and help clean up after the meal is complete. No prior meal service experience is needed. A positive and cheerful attitude is a must, and a sense of humor is highly recommended. MCC asks that all volunteers be at least 16 years old. Kids Cafe is open every Thursday from September to May from 6:00 - 7:30pm.  Volunteers are asked to be at MCC by 5:45pm to help set up.

Administration:

Website Manager
Commit to a few hours per month and manage a website at local nonprofit. Duties include: make textual corrections and changes to website, upload updated information, upload pictures and image files, attach pdf versions of quarterly newsletter and annual report, mentor staff members on website management using Dreamweaver software, and advise agency management on possible website improvements. Seeking a reliable, open-minded and patient individual to assist with website management. A degree in computer science and practical experience in website construction and management are required. Experience in non-profit sector, good communication skills, flexibility and a good sense of humor are a plus. Minimum age is 18.

Handyman (or woman)
Are you handy around the house or have experience as an electrician, plumber, carpenter or painter? We need a few good men (or women) to assist with minor building repairs. Work with building maintenance staff to help replace overhead lights, put in wall electrical sockets and fix plugged drains so that our programs can run as smoothly as possible. Seeking motivated, patient and friendly volunteers who have the ability to do minor building repairs in plumbing, carpentry, electrician and painting trades. It's important to interact well with and respect our culturally diverse clients. Hours are weekdays, sometime between 9am - 5pm. Minimum commitment is 6 hours per month. Minimum age is 18.

YouthBuild:

Health and/or Professional Trade Presenter
Share your knowledge about a career in the construction trade or personal health information for YouthBuild, an academic and vocational training program for at-risk young adults ages 18-24 working towards their GED while learning the carpentry trade through the building of a new home. Construction trade workshop areas might include what to expect in a career in the construction field, how to look for and find employment, tips on conducting oneself professionally on the job or in an interview, managing personal finances, or other important life skills. Professionals in medical and community health fields may offer presentations on current health issues and preventive medicine such as healthy diet, benefits of exercise, sexually transmitted diseases, etc. Either a one-time presentation or a few hours each month to present topics may work for you. Workshop presenters can be small groups or individual volunteers. Program runs Monday - Thursday, 7:30am to 4pm; hours are flexible within that time frame. Minimum age is 18.

Adult Basic Education Tutor
Tutor young adults one-on-one or in small groups in our Youthbuild Program to help advance their reading levels and math skills. This program provides construction skills and educational advancement to at-risk men and women 18-24 years old. This is your chance to help people realize their potential and move forward on a meaningful path in life. Tutoring times are flexible—Thursdays between 8:30am and 3:30pm OR Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings between 8:30am and 11:30am. Minimum commitment is two hours per week. Orientation will be provided. Aspiring teachers and retired educators are encouraged to apply, and though previous experience with adult learners is a plus, none is necessary. A willingness to commit to a weekly tutoring schedule is important in building trust between tutor and young adult. Volunteers must be able to climb stairs and have patience working with young adults. Minimum age is 18.
